Fuerteventura – Like Nowhere Else.

Looking north towards Morro Jable

from Punto de Jandia.

The second largest of The Canary Islands, Fuerteventura has the longest history of the archipelago. Situated close to the African coast, the Sahara Dessert is little more than 200km away.

The turquoise blue sea laps on to the endless white sand beaches, and with over 3000 hours of sunshine a year, it is a haven for relaxation and enjoyment.

Away from the coastal towns, you will discover Fuerteventura’s rich history.

Betancuria, the original capital and oldest town of the Canaries, was founded in 1405, by Norman conqueror Jean de Bethencourt. It is home to the famous Museum of Archaeology.

Touring the island, you will see castles, fortresses and towers, the remains of many pirate raids.

Visit Playa Garcey and see the shipwreck of the S.S. American Star, or the craft village at Tefia, the choice is endless.

Driving around Fuerteventura could not be easier, so if you have little or no experience of driving on “the wrong side of the road”, it is the ideal place to start. There is very little traffic (other than in the main towns); you can drive for miles on the newly constructed roads, without seeing another vehicle. So remember your driver's licence, and sample the whole of the island.

For the sports-minded, there are a multitude of opportunities. For the adventurous, there is scuba-diving, surfing, wind-surfing, jet skiing and more.

For the more sedate, the championship Fuerteventura Golf Club, venue of the 2004 Spanish Open will provide a challenge to remember. A second course is nearing completion at the club, along with several others around the island. Fuerteventura will shortly be a mecca for golfers of all abilities, especially during the long winter months of northern Europe.

The waters around Fuerteventura abound with fish, over 80 species ranging from hammerhead sharks to the prettiest wrasse. Tuna and barracuda can be caught from the shore, along with bream mullet and bass, making the island an anglers dream.
